In vitro fertilisation (IVF)

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is the process of artificially fertilising an ovum (egg cell) with sperm outside the body (in vitro). IVF is an important treatment method used when other assisted reproductive techniques have failed to solve the problem of infertility. The IVF procedure involves monitoring a woman’s ovulation, retrieving the egg from the ovaries, fertilising it with sperm in the laboratory and then transferring the resulting embryo (zygote) into the patient’s uterus to ensure a successful pregnancy.
